Dengue cases in Negros continue to rise

CASES of dengue in Negros Occidental increased to 115 percent, said the Provincial Health Office (PHO) Thursday.

It said that from 81 cases, it had increased to 174 from January to February 27, 2010 of which cases were based on the list of admissions in the different hospitals in the province, both private and public, said the PHO.

Cadiz City recorded the most number of cases while Silay City – 27; Sagay City – 23; EB Magalona and Escalante City with 12 cases each; Talisay City - nine, La Carlota - eight, Manapla – seven; and Victorias City - six.

PHO head Dr. Luisa Efren said that the increase in dengue cases was inevitable despite community awareness and heightened information drive resulting to its early dengue cases detection.

Furthermore, she said that the community is now aware of the immediate precautionary measures to seek medical help whenever fever is detected in a patient.

The positive action of the community has resulted to zero deaths for the first two months of the year as compared to last year with two fatalities from Bago City and Calatrava.

The PHO also continuously conducts massive information drive as well as search and destroy of breeding places of mosquitoes thus encouraged the community to seek early treatment on early occurrence of fever.

Close monitoring and supervision were also done in municipalities and cities with higher incidence of dengue cases.

Health sanitation in the area was also strictly monitored while households were encouraged to practice the 4 o’clock habit.

The PHO has likewise intensified its campaign for more blood donations for future demands of the increasing trend of dengue cases, Efren said.
