Donaire, Melligen unfazed vs Aug. 15 opponents

BOTH Negrense RP welterweight champion Mark Jason Melligen and former International Boxing Organization/International Boxing Federation flyweight champion Nonito Donaire are unfazed going into their scheduled August 15 fights versus separate opponents at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, reports said Friday.

Donaire, who takes on Panama’s Rafael Concepcion for the World Boxing Association (WBA) super flyweight interim title, said he is confident he will be able to come out triumphant against Concepcion, whom he described as “very brave.”

Donaire scored a fifth round, one-punch demolition of Vic Darchinyan on July 7, 2007 to win the IBO and IBF flyweight titles.

For his part, Melligen, the former Negros Amateur Boxing Association (Naba) standout and 2005 Southeast Asian Games silver medalist, said he is also ready to take on 26-year old Mexican Michael Rosales (23-3, 21 KOs) in the undercard of the Donaire-Concepcion title fight.

Melligen made a courtesy call to NABA president and Games and Amusement Board (GAB) commissioner Juan Ramon ‘Monju’ Guanzon last weekend and assured him that he is training hard for his fight against Rosales. (HCV)
