BINIBINING Pilipinas 2007 2nd runner-up and Best in Swimsuit Abby Cruz taught kids and teenagers in Bacolod City about personality development and basic modeling at the MassKara Hall, New Government Center on October 16-17, 2011.
Students will hold a fashion show on October 19, 7 p.m. at the Government Center, she said, as she was invited by Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia to speak about her two-day training and workshop with the kids and teenagers of Bacolod City.

“I came here for this and also to witness the 32nd MassKara festival. It’s an honor to be here in Bacolod for the second time. I could say that your MassKara festival is truly world class,” she told Mayor Leonardia.
“It’s like the Mardigras in Brazil and I’m so happy to be part of it,” she added.
Cruz was in Bacolod last April also on the same purpose of teaching basic modeling to about 180 students whom she considered as best of the best.
“If the kids and teenagers here have the chance to show their talents, they will further hone what they naturally have. I hope that there will be more Ilonggos whom I can teach in the future. I am always available for Bacolod as I have known new friends here,” she said.
She added that teaching the kids and teenagers ageing from 1 to 12 years old was quite challenging. She had 19 teens and 14 kids now and she is like a pre-school teacher to them as the training and workshop has become more personalized.
The application part is their favorite which includes picture taking, posing and modeling.
She said that there are kids who had the potential to become models someday and it’s good that they started the training in a very young age.
Moreover, she also shared her experience in beauty pageant. She watched the MassKara queen pageant last night.
She said that candidates will just have to be themselves, show what they have and showcase everything that they have so that whether they will win or lose, there’s no regret.
As to the question and answer which is always the weakest part of the some candidates in a beauty pageant, Cruz said, “Q & A is not the basis to win because it can just be learned by every candidate. But of course you have to understand that the pressure on stage is so different being watched by many people in your gown or in your two-piece swim suit. But then the girls should just relax, considering that there is no right or wrong answer as long as they are their own person when they answer it. Just let it flow from one’s experience what they want in life and what their goals are, it will just happen. There is no one to impress, including the judges. I think if they will just be true to themselves, the answer will just come,” she said.
When asked what’s more advantageous, to be beautiful or intelligent, she said, “For me it’s either way. There are those who are beautiful but don’t know how to use their intelligence and others are intelligent and same, they don’t know how to use their beauty. I think it’s both ways. And if you don’t have one of the other, I think you just have to work on what your strengths are. I teach the kids and teenagers that even if you don’t have the beauty and you have the brains, then just be street smart and use it. Just be yourself. Most often than not, there are people who wants to be like this and like that when they are not. If they just believe in themselves and say, ‘Hey, this is me and I am going to be a role model. I want to be someone that people will look up to and someone who can be a good example to the youth and future generation, not just be responsible for yourself, but for others, for your family and community, then it will just come. You will shine more if you be yourself.’”
Moreover, Cruz was asked by the Mayor why she is doing this, have she gone a formal training on this? She answered, “I went through a school of life that teaches me more. I went through life and had my own seasons in life. I had a few setbacks when I was younger and now as you grew older, you become mature. All of us can attest to that when you were young, you will do stupid things. But when you grow older, you have to be responsible as others are looking after you. You are your own model, so you don’t need to look for somebody to be your model. Don’t look for that somebody and start within yourself. Now is the preparation time for you to become that person. It is not an overnight thing.” (CNC)
