Ecoture 2011: Going green for a sustainable future

MISS Grendel Alvarado, a top model of the Philippines, first graced the front cover of Sun.Star Weekend Bacolod’s October 3 to 9, 2010 issue in a stunning wedding outfit created by Bacolod fashion designer Mr. Bryan Cuachon.

Miss Grendel was part of the Sugar and Style Fashion Show that was held at the New Grand La Proa Ballroom of the L’ Fisher Hotel last September 9, 2010.

Once again, Miss Grendel graces the pages of Sun.Star Weekend Bacolod as the lead model of the Ecoture Fashion Show that was held along Gatuslao Street fronting the Organic Market and Restaurant.

The fashion show that was held last December 19, 2011 in line with the 6th Organic Farmers Festival showcased eco-friendly fashion designs of Mr. Edgar Jaranilla and the BAG-O Plastic bags of the women from Bago City.

Maria Roselyn Solinap of the Organik na Negros! Organic Producers and Retailers Association or Onopra is the person responsible for my involvement in such a noble endeavor.

In a recent meeting with Miss Ma. Roselyn at the Organic Market, I noticed that she was using a hand bag made of recycled plastic bags produced by the entrepreneurial group called BAG-O Plastic. The members of the group are women from Bago City who were taught the art of crocheting by a US Peace Corps volunteer named Miss Rachael Saler from New York City.

These BAG-O Plastic bags were put on display at the SM Mall of Asia last November 4, 2011 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the US Peace Corps. Here in Bacolod City they are presently on display at the Negros Showroom of the Association of Negros Producers. Check them out and see how simple plastic bags which usually find their way into garbage dumps can be turned into a useful commodity. They come in flashy designs and colors too!
