Background on award
Sun.Star Bacolod is the community paper of the Bacoleños and Negrenses. As such, the paper has long endeavored to be part of and to publish events that occur in the community… happenings which are of interest to the people of Negros Occidental.
When it comes to events and happenings, no festival in the entire island of Negros is grander and more actively supported and participated in by the stakeholders than the annual Panaad sa Negros Festival, the acknowledged mother of all festivals in the province.
Not only does Panaad showcase the best products and tourist attractions in the province, it also showcases the most beautiful Negrenses during the search for ‘Lin-ay sg Negros’.
And to empower the readers in choosing their favorite candidate, Sun.Star launched the Readers’ Choice Award in 2006.
Riza Jane L. Abong of Escalante City was hailed as the first Sun.Star Readers’ Choice in 2006, bringing home cash prize, certificate and her elegantly framed picture citing her award.
Spurred by the overwhelming response to the contest, Sun.Star continued with the award which added spice to the beauty contest. In 2007, Ma. Corazon Bilbao of E.B. Magalona won the prize. In 2008, it was the turn of Jade Marie Penado of Talisay City to bag the honor while Kris Piamor G. Gicaro of La Castellana won in 2009.
Years 2010 and 2011 were Bacolod City’s turn, as Christine Daphne D. Villanueva and Mary Catherine M. Abayon, respectively, won the prize.
