NEGROS Occidental is more than just sugar, indeed. It’s also home to the best gamefowl strains and bloodlines in the country—and the most passionate gamefowl and cockfighting aficionados.

As its next important industry, Negros Occidental is a top exporter of gamefowl, with more than 200,000 fighting cocks exported annually or about P1 billion in sales.

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. says gamefowl is now the second largest industry in this province, next to sugar. There is P4-million worth of gamefowl in this province, with an estimated P2-billion budget for its upkeep.

This pride for gamefowl and cockfighting will be highlighted this week with the staging of 1st Gamefowl Expo sa Negros at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Brgy.Mansilingan Bacolod City on Feb. 21 to 23.

Gamefowl Expo director Ernie Hinojas says among the top breeders who will showcase their quality-bred stocks during the three-day trade and exposition are Nene Abello, Lance de la Torre, Eddie Boy Ledesma, the Ampil Brothers, Dante Hinlo, Johnny Jalandoni, Melque Benedicto, Juancho Aguirre, Manny Delleva, Felix Trebol and Raffy Yulo.

Breeding stocks frontliners include the Sweaters, the Lemons, the Greys, Roundheads, Clarets, Kelsos and Albany-strain gamefowls, Hatch-strains, Butchers and the Brown Reds.

According to Hinojas, no other place in the Philippines can match the quality of gamefowl breeding stocks in Negros.

In fact, he claims, only in Bacolod can you find the authentic Sweater-strain fowls, because the originator of this breed in the Philippines is Nene Abello who hails from Negros Occidental.

What about the famous Lemons-strains? Hinojas says American breeder Duke Hulsey has a ready answer: “You can only find this in Negros!”

“For the last 44 years now, Negros Occidental enjoys the upper hand in gamefowl breeding because of the infusions of the best available strains and bloodlines of gamefowls,” says Hinojas.

“Wherever you go in the Philippines, majority of the breeding stocks that are being utilized by gamefowl breeders usually have traces of Negros-bred broodfowl,” he adds.

Meanwhile, several symposia and seminars are also lined up for visiting gamefowl breeders and cockfighting aficionados.

Highlighting the third day of the expo is a 4-Cock Breeders’ Derby at the covered court of the Panaad Park.Danny B. Dangcalan
