A Walk in the Park

Monday, March 3, 2014

WALKING into the chandelier-lit hall, everyone flashing a bright smile, occasionally coupled with a firm handshake or a warm beso-beso— I think out loud: I’m in good company!

That company is the Negros Press Club, the oldest press club in the country having been organized in 1936, holding its 78th Induction Ceremony Saturday night at the Provincial Capitol building, the seat of power of the Provincial Government.

Arriving at the Social Hall, I see friends I haven’t seen for months and colleagues I regularly rubbed elbows with in the beat, and the evening promised to be a lovely one.

For indeed, what could go wrong when you are with friends and co-workers, spending the evening with cozy music and some wine?

Every year, the induction ceremony of the Negros Press Club is something that we look forward to with such excitement and delight.

This is one occasion to renew ties of friendship and make new ones. Media friends you haven’t seen for a long time suddenly pop up, like an emoticon would in your computer screen, and newbies in the trade warming up to the group.

The induction ceremony is also an opportune time to be reunited with the pillars of the industry—the real movers and shakers of public opinion—as they hobnob with the other members, and to thank them for steering the club to where it is now.

On typical days, we see each other as competitors for news scoops, but in this evening, we throw aside our media affiliations, pens, cameras, recorders and all, and just let our hair down for our Facebook photos.

It was a fun and lazy Saturday, the moments captured in our lenses.
