A Walk in the Park

Monday, March 31, 2014

SHE looks at you for a millisecond, flashes that half-shy smile and then looks away. She stands up and walk—no, glide—with the grace of a figure skater, and the alpha-male in you wonder how on earth you have been disarmed by her charm. Just like that.

Meet the beautiful ladies of Negros, sweeter than sugar. And this song will play in your head like an LSS:

“Babayeng Negrosanon, Lin-ay nga matahum,
Sa taguipusuon ko, ikaw lang ang pagahandumon;
Dayan-dayanan ka sa hardin sang akon gugma,
Kun matam-is ang tubo, mas tam-is ka pinalangga ko.”

Sweet is the sugarcane in Negros, but sweeter are the ladies in our beloved province.

Composed by Glenn Salve and arranged by Art Madrigal, Babayeng Negrosanon won the grand prize in the Pop Songwriting Competition of the 2009 Panaad Festival.

It was interpreted by Charles Kevin Tan, who was also the emcee during the press presentation and skills competition of the 2014 Lin-ay sang Negros at Robinsons Place last Saturday.

The song was used in the production number where the ladies danced ala-Binibinang Pilipinas, and the song stays with you even after the show.

The press presentation of the Lin-ay served as their first public appearance, so it was a good idea to hold it in the mall where a large crowd can watch them in between the convenience of their shopping spree.

Reporters, most of whom are covering the Provincial Capitol beat, were invited to the presentation and they got to ask the candidates a question or two.

When the Q and A was over, the reporters chose their bets. Lin-ay sang Isabela Nesha Faith Dianala, for her candid answer and wit under pressure, was voted Muse of the Media.

She sustained her winning streak when, during the Flora and Fauna Costume Parade the next day, also at Robinsons Place, she was again chosen Best in Costume Design.

Lin-ay sang Bacolod Alexis Danica Drilon was chosen Lin-ay nga Ma-abilidad for her skills in selling Bacolod’s MassKara during the skills competition right after the press presentation on Saturday.

The next and final competition for the 22 ladies will be the long gown, swimwear, and Q & A, all on the Grand Coronation Night on April 4, Friday, 7 p.m.

Kapuso star Isabelle Daza will host the pageant, while My Husband’s Lover tandem Dennis Trillo and Tom Rodriguez will serenade the ladies.

I wonder how would the ladies feel being serenaded by two of the handsomest actors who played two of the handsomest gay characters on free TV. At the risk of second-guessing the ladies, I guess they will get kilig being serenaded by two popular actors, and won’t look at them as “TomDen loveteam” a.k.a. Vincent and Eric.

Here are the rest of the candidates: Binalbagan—Alyanna Serran, Cadiz City—Shermen Rose Perez, Candoni—Alaica Victoria Lambot, Cauayan—Apriel Claridad, E. B. Magalona—Lindy Cabanug, Escalante City—Danica Jane Doneza, Himamaylan City—Kristel Shane Genova, Hinigaran—Jolyn Ang, Hinobaan—Camille Victoria Acibido, Kabankalan City—Jincky Basis, La Carlota City—Kate Ynzon, Moises Padilla—Hazel May Meguiso, Murcia—Annalita Vizcarra, Sagay City—Marjodi Alexiz Tumonong, San Carlos City—Beverly Binghay, San Enrique—Krismaine Tallafer, Silay City—Thiryne Mondragon, Talisay City—Treni Rivera, Toboso—Maria Kristina Lim, and Victorias City—Casey Joy Jocsin.

As always, the Lin-ay coronation night is expected to be a show of pomp and pageantry befitting a new queen. On that night, let’s all stand up and put our hands together for the new Lin-ay sang Negros.
