IT SEEMS like a night of never-ending dances at the Negros Museum in Bacolod last week. It was an evening of different dances like ballet, contemporary jazz, and hip-hop staged in one spectacular show.
The show was staged by participants of the Composition and Movement Analysis Program (C-MAP), founded by Negrense Dwight Rodrigazo. He is a former principal soloist and teacher of Ballet Philippines (BP), and until now is a guest choreographer of BP.
Four groups with themes, DreamWorks, Street, Home and Journey, and other solo performances amazed the audience, including World Dance Alliance president Steve Villaluz and Negros Cultural Foundation president Lynn Gamboa.
Now on its second year, C-MAP has partnered with the World Dance Alliance-Philippines to hold a National C-MAP-Dance Pull Project Choreographers Program from March 24 to 31. It held a showcase in the evening of March 31 at the Negros Museum.
"This program is for all choreographers and dance teachers whose passion is to create movements into dance," according to Dwight who is also the director of C-MAP.
"It is all about movement, pure dance that could be fully applied to any dance genre a choreographer or a dance teacher belongs," he adds.
Dwight said C-MAP aims to further develop the knowledge, intuition and creativity of choreographers and dance teachers in creating dance in the Philippines.
The goal is to create an environment where choreographers and dance teachers could exchange thoughts and ideas, he said.
"To all the knowledge and wisdom my mentors have imparted on me and for the two decades of teaching and still learning my craft, it is an honor to return the favor by sharing all those things I've learned to my fellow choreographers and teachers," Dwight said.
Dwight, 43, said he created C-MAP as his contribution to the development of dance in Negros by passing on his knowledge and skills to the younger generation of dancers and choreographers.
The C-MAP Program has two courses, this year is for Level 1, 2, and 3 (Improvisation and Composition) and for next year's final course, the Level 4 and 5 (Movement Invention and Movement Analysis).
"This program is a collage of all my learning from different choreographic studies and experiences. The program includes a syllabus derived from the materials and knowledge I have acquired during my journey in creating dance with Ballet Philippines, Airdance and as a dance scholar in Brumachon Centre Choreographique National De Nantes, France," he added.
This years National C-MAP workshop has been fully supported by the World Dance Alliance and there were 39 choreographers, dance teachers and Theater Directors nationwide who applied for the program.
However, there were only 14 of them who have been selected to participate in the C-MAP by the World Dance Alliance and the Dance Pull Project.
The participants who have been selected were from Ballet Philippines (Manila), Cebu Center for Dance (Cebu), Siliman University College of Performing Arts and Visual Arts (Dumaguete), School for Theater Arts 'N' Dance (Cagayan de Oro City) and various choreographers and dance teachers from Bacolod City.
C-MAP Workshop also includes a program for dancers, and there were 16 who have been accepted in the workshop from Manila, Cebu, Dumaguete, Cagayan de Oro and Bacolod City.
They have experienced different dance genres for eight days from different dance masters; Richardson Yadao (Ballet Philippines-Principal Dancer) in contemporary dance, Edana Mae Labitoria (Ballet Philippines) in neo-classical ballet, Ma. Celina Dofitas (Ballet Philippines) in classical ballet, Xiao Mitchao (Dance Pull Project assistant artistic director) in contemporary and hip-hop, and Ismael Java (Kalingaw: Ang Teatro Hiligaynon- director and West Negros University COTEP head) in folk dance, with daily dance improvisation and choreography headed by Dwight.
