Plant a seed today

Magnificent Mondays

Monday, May 12, 2014

“TITO Mae says I have very good hand-eye coordination!” Nathan reported to me with a very big smile on his face.

His Tito Mae has been bringing him, and his best friend, Pablo Garcia, to play golf. After their game, Tita Agnes would prepare a bonfire to roast marshmallows while she has their pasta readied. (Thank you very much for the blessing that you are Tito Mae and Tita Agnes Jalandoni!)

Two weeks ago Nathan, with his brother Anton, joined the Junior Golf clinic set up by Rico Cajili, JR Tanpinco and Bianca Limjap. Each morning Nathan would get up early, and already dressed in his golf attire, he would wake up Anton to make sure they would be on time for their practice! The caddies would report that even before Coach Bianca arrived, Nathan would be doing the preliminary stretching and the light jog.

And it all began when his Tito Mae planted a seed in his heart. That short, sincere comment was a seed that has grown into Nathan’s passion for golf. It may have only been an objective observation for his Tito Mae at that time. But for Nathan, it meant: “I have the gift to play golf. I am good at it. I will succeed!”

Whether you like it or not, you are a farmer (or a gardener or an ecological expert). You plant seeds. By your words, your actions, and your thoughts. And you will harvest what you plant. You will reap what you sow. It’s a universal principle whether you believe in it or not. What kind of seeds do you plant?

Maybe today is harvest time for you. You will find out that the contract has been signed! The check has arrived! The project is complete! Or…it’s waiting time. Maybe you have been waiting for a week, a month, a year! Well, you know what? Why not keep planting today?

Plant good thoughts! “I don’t think she’ll sign the contract.” Erase. “She will see the benefits of our offer. The contract will be signed. In the meantime, who else can I bless with our services today?”

Sow words of encouragement. At work, and especially at home. “You know what, I really believe you will succeed!” “You’re really good at what you do. Keep it up!” “Kanamit gid sang sinugba mo! (You grill really well!)” Maybe your daughter has been sharing with you a silly idea. Listen some more. See the spectacular in the silly. Plant a seed of confidence in her! “You have a great idea! Can you tell me more about it?”

Plant professionalism. Come on time. Execute with excellence. Keep your word. Do what matters most. Act on what needs to be done even if it is inconvenient and challenging.

Today, plant as many seeds as you can! At work and at home. Robert Louis Stevenson says, “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.”

Choose to have a Magnificent Monday!
