INEZ was one of the batch’s “nerds.” For Carla, that meant thick glasses. Books instead of trinkets. Books instead of boys. Carla takes a sip of her Mocha Frap as she eyes her high school batchmate across the mall. Inez looks different. Prettier. Not the right word. Stunning. Yes. The eyes of the men across the coffee shop confirm that.
The caffeine pushes her thoughts out of her mind: “Vivi, what has happened to us these past 20 years? The boys used to look at us the way they look at her.”
“She goes to the gym as often as we buy Fraps,” Vivian curtly replies.
Whether it is losing weight, or earning more, or being happier, have you ever asked the question, “Why are some people more successful than others?”
In 1940, Albert Gray was given the task by a large business organization to answer that very question. Managers and teams in his company all received the same screening, training, and compensation package. Why was it that only a certain percentage successfully reached their targets? Let me quote you his answer:
“The secret of success of every man who has ever been successful lies in the fact that he formed the habit of doing things that failures don't like to do.”
Inez looks stunning because she has made it a habit, whether she feels like it or not, to go to the gym and say no to sweets.
Henry pays for his BMW in cash because he has made it a habit to make money work for him, instead of him working for money. Cynthia’s marriage is marvelous because she makes it a habit to pray every day with her husband.
You know what you need to do. Do you do it? Albert Gray explains why we do not do what we need to do:
“Why are successful men able to do things they don't like to do while failures are not? Because successful men have a purpose strong enough to make them form the habit of doing things they don't like to do in order to accomplish the purpose they want to
Do you have a big emotional purpose to change? Do you have a big “why” to keep fit? To make your marriage work? To increase your income? To strengthen your family?
Find that big “why,” that emotionally charged purpose to change. Next find the big “what,” the habit that will bring about the results you want. Then do it one day at a time regardless of how you feel.
One fine Monday you will need to stop yourself to behold a stunning, smiling, and successful person. Surprise! It’s your reflection on a glass door!
Carla looks at her full cup of Mocha Frap. Puts it down and pushes it toward Vivian. She stands up with a grin, “I’m going to the gym.”
Do not put off today what will make you succeed tomorrow. Begin a new successful habit today!
Choose to have a Magnificent Monday!
