EXCITEMENT will once again fill the air on Sunday, May 25, as a host of beautiful young ladies adorned in glittering gowns will once again parade along Araneta Street in downtown Bacolod City in celebration of Santacruzan, the Festival of the Holy Cross.
It will be hosted by the Bacolod Cultural Foundation (BCFI), which has been organizing the Santacruzan for the past 27 years. It has become one of the most colorful and anticipated religious May-time festivals in the city.
“We invite all Bacoleños to enjoy this glittering celebration,” said BCFI president Araceli Mirano. “As in previous years, we are expecting a large crowd to see the beautiful sagalas.”
The Santacruzan is a popular religious-historical event and is held throughout the Philippines every May. The Santacruzan is part of the celebration of Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May) in tribute to the Virgin Mary.
It commemorates the search for the Holy Cross by Queen Helena (Reyna Elena) and her son, the newly converted emperor Constantine. After some archeological diggings at the site of the Crucifixion, she unearthed three crosses. She tested each one by asking a sick servant lie on all three. The cross where the servant recovered was identified as Christ’s.
After the Holy Cross was found in Jerusalem and brought back to Rome, there was a joyful celebration of thanksgiving.
This year’s Santacruzan in Bacolod will begin with a Mass at the San Sebastian Cathedral at 3:30 p.m. The procession will start at the Cathedral going to San Juan St., Luzuriaga St., Araneta St., Gonzaga St., Gatuslao St. and Rizal St. It will then proceed to SM City northwing for the traditional flower-laying ceremony.
The BCFI is celebrating the 2014 Santacruzan in association with the Bacolod City government, Negros Occidental Culture and Sports Foundation, SM City Bacolod, ABS-CBN and Coca-Cola FEMSA Philippines.
