JEFFREY’S heart sank. The coach rejected him. It had always been his childhood dream to be part of the high school basketball team.
Two reasons for the rejection: he was just a sophomore, and he wasn’t tall enough.
Jeffrey believed that if he were given a chance, he could play even better than the taller players. He asked what else he could work on. The coach told him: your free throws.
That day, and everyday thereafter, for the next 12 months he made 500 free throws daily! Let me repeat that - MADE. Not shoot. If he shot 1,000 free throws but made only 450, he would not sleep until he sank the remaining 50!
With such dedication and determination, Jeff made it to the varsity team the next year. His performance sealed him a seat as a college ball player.
Today, the whole world knows him as Michael Jeffrey Jordan. Acclaimed by the NBA as “The greatest basketball player of all time.”
Businessmen, athletes, doctors, managers, students, young and old have been inspired by the athletic prowess of Michael Jordan. Most do not even play basketball. His inspiration touches a chord in everyone. It awakens the gift that is inside.
The world is filled with millions of gifted basketball players. What distinguishes Jordan from all of them is not his gift, it’s how he has grown it.
You have that gift. It does not always come out unless you use it. Develop it. Grow it. Every single day. Grow your gift today!
What is a gift? It is something you say or do that blesses the life of others.
The more popular ones are the gift of art, athletics, linguistics, leadership, mathematics, and science. These are often rewarded by academes. The less popular, yet equally valuable, are the gifts of listening, helping, affirming, caring, encouraging, generosity. The list is endless!
In your gift is your purpose. In your gift is your joy. The more you share your gift, without care for how others see it, accept it, or applaud it, the more it grows.
Bless others with your gift today. Bless others with your gift everyday.
What is your gift? What are you good at? What do people normally thank you for? What were your “born to do?” What do you want to do but are afraid to try out?
Jordan says, “I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
Failing is part of developing your gift. Welcome it.
Today is the day to acknowledge your gift and commit to make it grow every day.
Do your 500-free-throws today. Cook. Write. Enroll. Speak. Listen. Dance. Serve. Share. Read. Love. Pray.
Do it again tomorrow, do it every day for the next 10 years.
The world is blessed because it has you.
Choose to have a Magnificent Monday!
