Edouard’s birthday party-A A +A

SOME friends come to our lives for a season, some for a reason, but some friends stay forever.
My friend Eduardo “Edouard” Lacson Garcia Jr. turned another milestone and with an impromptu celebration, family and friends came to greet the “festejado.”
Brother Philip was there with Tina and their son, Giles, who was doted on by the whole Garcia clan. Sister-in-law Melinda with daughters Rona and Sabrina came also to greet their Tito Edouard.
His first degree paternal cousins from the De Leons were all in attendance -- from Richard who is in town from the US, to Lourdes, Gene, Millette, Teret, and Annette. Not discounting the sons of Gene, Gerry and JB who came with their beloveds. More from the Garcia clan were Chick and Nanette, Ray who came solo, and George and Jeanette Sanchez.
On the Lacson side, there were Bibing Montelibano Villanueva and Ted, Manila-based but made sure that their visit extended to Edouard’s birthday. Bibing and Edouard have been two of my dearest friends and my life is blest because of their friendship.
As to the friends, the ones Edouard journeyed from adolescent recklessness to adult maturity were there to be counted. There’s Chita Reyes, Larry Lacson, Aboy Severino, Mark Vargas, Raymond Fuentes, Maggie Echaus, and Edgar Alunan. Also good friends Anna Bacells came with her beau Henry, Chipit and Maricor Dulay, and Craig and Lilia Villanueva.
There are many quotes that speak about best friends. “True friendship is not being inseparable. It’s being separated and nothing changes.” That is a truth as far as my friendship with Edouard. Friends since childhood, now that we are channeling our own destinies in new chapters in our lives, we may be separated in daily activities but never separable in thoughts of good wishes and concern especially in critical times.
What is a friend? “A friend is someone you can call at any hour, to laugh, to cry or to complain.” Edward always has a door wide open for me whenever I knock. It may be to ventilate my angst, to cry when I am throwing a pity party for myself or just to laze around and talk and laugh about the crazy times we have spent together over the years. As it is said, “Nothing compares to the stomachache you get when laughing with your best friends.”
My sons always wonder why we are redundant with the funny tales that seem to surface every time our circle of friends get together and we laugh and laugh like it was the first time we heard the story and end up in stitches. I believe great friends are like that. We can even laugh at each other because we believe that we are all great eggs while embracing the fact that we are all half-cracked.
To many, Edouard is perceived “to the manor born,” “de buena familia,” Parisian education; on the top of the guest list if you want your event to be a who’s who affair; world traveler; crème de la crème, mega dresser, top of the line beamer and a string of high profile adjectives.
Edouard is indeed all that. But what the public does not know that beyond this in born glam cinematic aristocracy a genteel heart burns.
They say the best way to know a man’s character is to see how he treats his household. Edouard’s home has loyal helpers who have served him and his family over the years. While many whine of the rigodon of their helpers, there are two generations in his home employ. I need not give you an investigative report because I have seen it over the years. Loyalty is never earned by currency. It is a reciprocal act—received because it is heartily given.
Edouard is devoted. Not vocal about it, but he is a caring brother, uncle and cousin, and, of course, a friend. But surpassing all these fidelities is really Edouard’s total devotion to his Mama, Tita Nena.
Beyond dutiful, it is a love that measures no bounds. Edouard acknowledges his limit capacities and there is only so much he can personally do for her physical care but the quality attention he gives his Mama is admirable. To Edouard, Tita Nena is a gift, a priceless blessing and nothing is ever enough for his Mama that’s why he gives the best of himself when it comes to Tita Nena.
The love of a son for his mother is quite a grace and very special. And the blessing of another year, this special grace just multiplies. Happy birthday, Edouard!
