ONE of my happiest moments was when I got to know Edouard Garcia because he is my idol, whom I fondly called “Nong Edouard.”

I remember it was a party on board Negros Navigation where we first met.

Edouard Lacson Garcia is widely regarded as the “high society priest of Negros.”

Coming from buena de familias, Manong Edouard has traveled the world, even at an early age.

I admire his good taste and fabulous style—the way he moves, dresses up, in dining, traveling, driving, and other ways—he has distinct taste and style.

I don’t feel awkward calling him "Manong Edouard" because we are also relatives on the Tionco or Tiongko side, the roots of my lolo, former congressman Raymundo Vargas, and another lolo, Jorge Vargas, former secretary during the time of President Manuel Quezon.

The lola of Manong Edouard is also a Tiongko, Dona Josefita Tiongko Lacson.

Manong Edouard loves and cares a lot for her Mama, Dona Nena Lacson-Garcia. I find them so cute when they are together.

I remember when my Dad's health was deteriorating and I was left alone as a child to take care of my Dad with my Mom because my sisters are all living in the States. And when I told Manong Edouard about it, he laughed and told me," Welcome to the Club."

Tita Nena, a very classy, refined and fashionable lady, and my aunts, Lilia Vargas-Villanueva and Virginia Vargas-Espinos, were schooled together in the 1930s in St. Scholastica's College run by German Benedictine Nuns. Tita Nena would tell me stories about the fun they had experienced in the Catholic exclusive girls school.

Nong Edouard celebrated his birthday at his bungalow last week.

Following my idol's patronage of international brands, I went to his birthday party wearing my Louis Vuitton blue collared shirt paired with my Hermes super tight pants whom Manong Edouard liked, and also Louis Vuitton belt, shoes and bag.

I was the first to arrive and I greeted him. He invited me to his well-designed bed room and I noticed that he looks younger.

After awhile, family members and relatives and society friends arrived.

The lunch was catered by Sea Breeze, the queen of the hotels in circa 60s to 80s with their great tasting foods. The party had so much fun.

Indeed, Mr. Edouard Garcia is the epitome of high society, class and fashion.
