You are not alone

EVERYONE experiences being happy and also being sad. Problems come and go. Some stay and make our lives miserable. Having so many issues and concerns can cause a person to feel depressed.

Some may develop into something more serious that it becomes a medical condition – clinical depression or a major depressive disorder. This illness is usually diagnosed by a psychiatrist.

Aside from feeling sad, a depressed person may feel unworthy, may seem tired always and may feel hopeless. These feelings may also lead to feeling suicidal or the feeling that it is better to die than experience the pains in life. Pain is unbearable. They think the world is better without them. They think of ways to end their lives. They feel that they do not have any reason to live. They do not find meaning in life. There is no more joy in their lives.

Are YOU experiencing this kind of pain? Do not be ashamed of your feelings. You are not alone. There are people who will listen to you without judging you.

What can you do?

First, you need to accept that what you are feeling is okay. It is nothing to be ashamed of. Once you have acknowledged it, seek help.

Find someone you trust – your best friend, or a sibling, a parent/an aunt/relative and share how you feel. If they laugh at you or don’t believe you, do not feel bad. Find another person to share your burden with. There is someone who cares.

Visit a mental health professional. If you are in school, consult with your guidance counselor. They are friendly and will welcome you with open arms. If you are not in school, talk to a psychologist, a priest or a pastor.

You can also help yourself

Stand up and fight – you can do it. Tell yourself that you solve all your problems. It may take time but you know it will come.

Set new goals – have something to look forward to.

Do something you previously liked doing – exercise, cook, read books, listen to music

Go out and interact with family and friends

Get involved in community projects - volunteer in an orphanage, in the church, in a senior’s center

Learn something new – a new language perhaps or a new recipe

Pray

Remember, suicide does not end the pain; it passes it on to someone else. Fight! Believe and learn to love yourself again. You are never alone. You are worth it. You are loved.
