Top communist rebel commander arrested-A A +A

SAN CARLOS CITY - A top commander of the Communist Party of the Philippines–New People’s Army (NPA) in Negros Island was arrested Monday by the joint forces of the Philippine National Police and military in Cadiz City.
Colonel Oscar Lactao, commanding officer of the Philippine Army’s 303rd Brigade, identified the NPA official as Romeo Nanta, 54 years old, alias Juanito Magbanua, Jack Nanta, Juaning, Islao and Kulas, commanding officer and Regional Operations Commander of Komite Rehiyonal-Negros.
His arrest was by virtue of warrants of arrest issued against him for various criminal cases, including murder, attempted murder, rebellion and robbery in band.
Based on military records, Nanta was allegedly responsible for the raid and disarming of 1st Provincial Mobile Group detachment at Barangay Malasibog, Escalante on March 19, 2006, during which they carted away several firearms.
He was also believed to be responsible for the harassment of Villegas Detachment at Barangay Villegas, Guihulngan, Negros Oriental on April 2006, and for burning of Victorias Milling Company and Central Lopez transloading station at Barangay San Jose, Toboso on March 2008.
Nanta is also allegedly responsible for the burning of the Globe Telecom cell site in Purok Mabuhay, Barangay Poblacion, Toboso, Negros Occidental and on the attack of La Libertad Police Station in Negros Oriental in 2008. His group also allegedly ambushed in Barangay Salamanca, Toboso a canter utility service vehicle loaded with civilian passengers and killed three civilians and wounded three others on July 2009.
Nanta is also allegedly responsible for the raid of ECJ farm at Barangay Suay, Himamaylan on February 2009, raid of Polopangyan detachment located in Barnagay Bug-ang, Toboso on August 10, and for disarming and sabotage of VMC pump station in Barangay 20, Victorias City on October 2010.
Nanta is now detained at the San Carlos City PNP.
