Monday, February 20, 2012

NEGROS Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said he will ask the endorsement of the Regional Development Council (RDC) in Western Visayas on his request to Transportation and Communications Secretary Mar Roxas to expand the Bacolod-Silay Airport and its runway to 500 meters.

"The airport terminal is so congested," Marañon said.

Marañon's move came as complaints on the poor condition of the airport's sanitation and air-conditioning system continue.

Marañon initially brought up the matter with Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez and some members of the Provincial Board which has already taken up the issue with airport authorities in previous years.

The extension of the airport's runway is expected to boost its capability for more international flights to also boost the tourism industry of the province.

Recently, direct flights to and from Korea were accommodated at the airport. (Teresa Ellera)
