Binay coming today-A A +A
Monday, June 18, 2012
VICE President Jejomar Binay and son Makati Mayor Jun Jun Binay are expected to arrive in the city today, Monday, to join Bacolodnons in celebrating the signing into law of Commonwealth Act No. 326, which created the City of Bacolod.
Binay is the guest of honor and speaker in today’s festivities.
Although there were text messages which circulated that the Vice President may not come, as he is reportedly going out of the country to attend the burial of Saudi Crown Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz, Mayor Evelio Leonardia said he has not yet received a confirmation from the Office of Vice President regarding changes in the official’s planned trip to Bacolod.
"We will wait and see," Leonadia said.
Leonardia said city officials will still request Malacañang next year to declare June 18 as a special non-working public holiday in the City of Bacolod.
"We will not give up," he stressed.
He said the June 18 Charter Day can't be altered because that is a historical fact.
He said those who went against the move to rectify the charter celebration based on historical fact have deprived Bacolodnons of a day to enjoy the commemoration of the signing into law of the charter of Bacolod.
Councilor Caesar Distrito said it appeared that Bacolod City lone district Representative Anthony Golez Jr., who opposed the move, is a "killjoy."
Leonardia also disagreed with Golez about the alleged “lies.”
"Who lied? It is not our orientation to lie. Maybe it's his [Golez] orientation, being the former presidential spokesman. June 18 is an established fact that Commonwealth Act No. 326 was signed into law and takes effect immediately after signing," he said.
The City of Bacolod will continue to celebrate the Charter Day today, the mayor said.
