Villar backs delay of barangay polls

FORMER Las Piñas representative Cynthia Villar, wife of Senator Manuel Villar, supports the move to postpone the barangay election.
The barangay election is scheduled on October 2013, only about five months after the holding of the regular elections on May 2013.
Villar, who was the guest speaker during the 45th Charter Day Anniversary of Cadiz City Wednesday, said that her support for the postponement of the poll exercise is based on her belief that barangay officials should be non-partisan.
Aside from the “non-partisan” issue, she pointed out that the holding of another election within a year from the regular election will be costly for the Commission on Elections and will be a big drain on the people's money.
Villar said that she supports the proposals to move the barangay elections either in 2015 or have the terms of the barangay officials extended from three years to five years.
Meanwhile, Villar said that the Nacionalista Party, which is headed by her husband, has yet to decide whether to coalesce with other major political parties.
She said that the Nacionalista Party presently already has four senatorial bets for the coming 2013 elections. The line-up includes her, Representative Robert Ace Barbers and re-electionist Alan Peter Cayetano.
