Wednesday, August 22, 2012
THE decision of the United Negros Alliance (UNA) on who will be the party's official candidate for Governor and Vice Governor in the province in 2013 elections will be known in August 30.
Vice governor Genaro Alvarez confirmed that, instead of August 29, the meeting among the top officials of the party will be held in Metro Manila on August 30.
Alvarez confirmed his attendance at the said meeting and that he believes that Governor Alfredo Maranon Jr. will also attend at the said meeting to be attended also by the six congressmen in the province.
Alvarez said Kabankalan Mayor Isidro Zayco, the new provincial chairman of the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC), will also attend the said meeting.
He also added that this meeting among top officials of UNA is the same selection process undertaken by the party in the six previous elections already.
Alvarez reiterated that he will abide by whatever decision will be made by the party and that the results of said meeting or negotiation among UNA officials will depend on those who will be attending.
The top level officials of UNA were supposed to meet last June 19 but the meeting was postponed.
Although Maranon and Alvarez have denied any rift between them, many observers noticed contradicting statements from both leaders of the province which lead to the presumption that the two are going to fight it out against each other for the top post in the province in the 2013 elections.
After the postponed meeting of UNA, Marañon announced he is seeking reelection in 2013 because of the support of the majority of the mayors in the province.
Alvarez, on the other hand, has also confirmed to have been endorsed by the mayors belonging to NPC in a meeting held in Manila.
The NPC has also appointed Zayco as the party's new provincial chairman without the knowledge of Marañon, the provincial chair of the party prior to the designation of Zayco.
Four mayors, including Zayco, also took their oath with NPC in Metro Manila in the absence and without the knowledge of Marañon. (Teresa D. Ellera)
