THERE was no consensus reached in an assembly in Manila on Thursday among United Negros Alliance (UNA) top officials, but they will hold another meeting next week to field one gubernatorial candidate in 2013 elections.
Negros Representative Mercedes Alvarez (6th district) revealed that Thursday’s meeting was a stalemate, because Representatives Jeffrey Ferrer and Alfredo Marañon III needed to catch their flight to Singapore.
Ferrer and Marañon reportedly left for Singapore with some Negros Occidental mayors who are members of the Association of Chief Executives (ACE).
Alvarez said that present at the meeting were all the top officials of the province, namely: Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr., Governor Genaro Alvarez, all six representatives in the province and Kabankalan City Mayor Isidro Zayco, the new provincial chairman of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).
Aside from herself, Ferrer and Rep. Marañon, and three other lawmakers, namely: Julio Ledesma IV (First District), Albee Benitez (Third District) and Alejandro Mirasol (Fifth District) attended the meeting.
Former Ambassador Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco Jr., founder of UNA and Chairman Emeritus of NPC, was also present in the meeting.
Rep. Alvarez said that Marañon brought up his intention of seeking re- election, citing the support of the majority of the mayors in the province for his re-election.
On the other hand, Vice Governor Alvarez also contemplated on the endorsement of the NPC mayors who wanted him as their gubernatorial candidate in 2013.
"The meeting was cordial and friendly," Rep. Alvarez said.
She added the meeting set either Thursday or Friday next week aims to further discuss the matter at hand.
"Everyone wants to work out for the unification of the party and possibly field only one complete slate from governor down to the cities and towns all over the province, like what they have been doing in previous elections,” the solon further said.
Sun.Star Bacolod tried to get the sides of other officials who attended the meeting but to no avail.
