GOVERNOR Alfredo Marañon Jr. is hoping that the closure of the final peace agreement between the government and the Revolutionary Proletarian Army (RPA) will be made this year.
Marañon said they have been waiting for the National Government to finally move for the closure of the final peace agreement.
The governor made the statement during the opening Monday of the celebration of the Peace Consciousness Month.
Marañon reiterated that the top enemy of the Filipino people is poverty. He believes that everybody, including the rebels, is working hard to fight poverty.
He said poverty is also one of the top priorities of the 11- point agenda of his administration.
"I believe we can achieve the fight against poverty," he said.
Marañon also noted that, despite the fact that our country is the only Christian nation in Asia, yet we have the longest insurgency.
He cited that about 90 percent of the Filipinos believe in Jesus, thus he said, "we should always think of our Christian values to achieve peace."
Army joins Peace Consciousness Month
Meanwhile, the 303rd Brigade of the Philippine army joins the Province of Negros Occidental in the celebration of the Peace Consciousness Month.
Last September 1, the 303rd Brigade together with Cafgus and ROTC cadets of West Negros University and Carlos Hilado Memorial State College, participated in the “Hataw for Peace” dance and taebo exercises led by Ching and Capitol Bodies at the Capitol Lagoon Park, Bacolod City.
The “Hataw for Peace” was the first official activity of the 9th National Peace Consciousness Month that is being observed by the province of Negros Occidental and its component cities and municipalities.
The 303rd Bde and its operationally controlled and detach service units fully support the provincewide celebration of the Peace Month, which include Peace Fora, Peace Debate, Peace Torch Relay and Light a Candle for Peace, among others.
The theme of this year’s Peace Consciousness Month Celebration is “Ikaw. Ako. Tayo. Magkaiba, Nagkaisa sa Kapayapaan.”( TDE)
