Creation of boxing commission gains support

COUNCILORS Sonya Verdeflor and Keith Emmanuel Ramos, Youth Council president, signified their support to House Bill 6409 authored by Saranggani Representative Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao that seeks the creation of the Philippine Boxing Commission that would provide and implement all necessary welfare, incentives and benefits.
"Our country is known worldwide for its world-class boxing champions. We are a country that continually develops many upcoming world-class boxers, many of whom come from families in Bacolod City and in the Province of Negros Occidental in the likes of Donnie Nietes and the Velasco brothers,” Verdeflor and Ramos said.
His bill will focus on professional boxing and the provision for comprehensive benefits for all boxers who have competed, won in international boxing events and who had brought honor and prestige to our country, is very laudable considering the tremendous risks to life and limb that our Filipino boxers undergo, that could affect their future and of their families.
This measure ought to be given full support in order to put the Philippines as among the great nations that dominate in the world’s professional boxing industry.
Pacquaio is the adopted son of Bacolod and has proven his worth as a great Filipino boxer in his time.
Negros has also produced great boxers way before Pacquiao became a world boxing icon.
They believe that this bill should be supported. (Carla N. Canet)
