BACOLOD City Councilor Jose Carlos Lopez pushes measures that will maintain clean rivers, creeks, and waterways as he believes that these should be taken care of for a healthy ecosystem in the city.
Lopez said the excessive garbage polluted the rivers which resulted in contaminating the drinking water.
He stressed there is a need to conduct a clean-up and capacity building workshops for the residents living along the river banks.
Local government units (LGUs), through the Environment and Natural Resources Office have the power and function to take active participation in all efforts concerning water quality protection and rehabilitation.
He cited the provisions of Presidential Decree 198 or the “Provincial Water Utilities Act” a Production Assessment Charge (PAC) is provided to ensure that there are mitigating measures to protect water resources such as watersheds, aquifers, rivers, and other tributaries through reforestation from the collected charge from commercial used water utilization.
