Councilor: Speed up Burgos Market rehab
-A A +AThursday, September 27, 2012
BACOLOD City Councilor Caesar Distrito asked Mayor Evelio Leonardia to fast-track the rehabilitation of the fire-razed part of the North Public Market (Burgos) and to hasten the processing for its reconstruction.
On May 6, 2012, 28 stalls in the North Public Market (Burgos Market) were damaged by the fire. Twelve of the said stalls were razed and the damage amounts to more or less P1.5 million.
It is almost five months since the incident took place and the present situation there is worsening, according to Distrito.
He said there is a need to repair the burned portion of the market to accommodate the stall owners who were also affected by the fire incident.
The North Public Market has its own trust fund by virtue of City Ordinance 543, series of 2011, which is intended for its repair and maintenance, and it clearly manifests that there is no problem in terms of budget for its reconstruction.
The City Government had allocated P7 million for the repair of the markets and, out of the said funds, P3 million was allocated for the repair of the burned portion of Burgos Market.
It is not only the affected market vendors who are complaining for the long delayed repair, but also the market goers and customers of Burgos Public Market. (CNC)
