GOVERNOR Alfredo Marañon Jr. with Team Negros is set to present before the Department of Education (DepEd) in Manila the final bid of the province for the hosting of the Palarong Pambansa 2013 in April.
Marañon said he hopes the province will win the hosting over Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
Negros hosted four Palarong Pambansa events at the Panaad Park and Sports Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan in 1998 and 2000 and at the Paglaum Sports Complex in 1974 and 1979.
If Negros wins the hosting in 2013, Bacolod City will be its co-host.
To help the bid of the province, Mayor Evelio Leonardia wrote to Education Secretary Armin Luistro endorsing the province as next year's host of the school-based national sports and cultural competition.
Leonardia cited that the local government units (LGUs) are in cooperation with the province in hosting national and international sports events.
Marañon said Negros Occidental has the capability to host national games, as it has prepared the venues for the games and the billeting areas with available amenities.
Mildred Garay, DepEd regional director, said she is 90 percent sure Negros Occidental will win the bid because the province has existing facilities to host the event.
About 10,000 to 20,000 athletes, delegates, and spectators are expected to participate in the Palaro 2013. (Teresa D. Ellera)
