BACOLOD Mayor Evelio Leonardia said he will administer a mass wedding of 2,010 couples at the Bacolod City Government Center grounds on February 14. It is a tradition in Bacolod City to hold a mass wedding every year during Valentine’s Day.
Last year, Vice President Jejomar Binay came to Bacolod to attend the mass wedding which was the biggest then with 775 couples, recalled Leonardia.
“As of the moment, we have 2,010 couples or a total of 4,020 men and women and we expect to have a crowd as big as the BacoLaodiat and the MassKara Festival. We encourage the couples to invite their friends and relatives. We also invite the public to witness this historic event,” Leonardia said.
Based on civil registry records, Caloocan Mayor Enrico Enchiverri claimed during their foundation anniversary that they had 1,500 couples joining their mass wedding.
“We might lead in the Guinness Book of World Records. Originally, we wanted the same number of couples last year but many asked to be included until it reached 1,000 then 1,500 and finally 2,000,” Leonardia said.
He disclosed that he is making arrangements festival chairman Dr. Leonito “Diotay” Lopue to include the mass-wedding event in the calendar of the 13th Bacolaodiat Festival which starts today, February 7.
As part of the festival, business tycoon John Gokongwei Jr. will be honored at noon of February 14.
“I believe the event will arouse curiosity so we expect a big crowd. This is going to be an all-weather event. This will also be the first official function of Corazon Mori because her appointment as Civil Registrar of Bacolod City was approved by the Bacolod City Council Monday.
“We would like our society to be a stronger community. We believe marriage is the foundation of a family which is the basic unit of society,” he stressed.
They have no final decision on the budget yet since they do not know what treats to give to the couples who will wed on Valentine’s Day.
Leonardia appealed to the business community and even the hotels if they can provide some door prizes to the couples joining the mass wedding.
