AKBAYAN-Negros has strongly condemned the recent ambush staged by the communist New People’s Army (NPA) in Cabacungan, La Castellana, killing nine people, including a policeman.

Akbayan, a progressive and militant political organization struggling for societal change through peace socio-political transformation, issued a statement condemning the massacre.

Akbayan spokesman Edwin Balajadia said the ambush and slaying mostly of unarmed civilians going home from a fiesta is a gross violation of the basic humanitarian law and human rights principles enunciated, especially in conditions of internal armed conflicts.

The admission no less than NPA’s Leonardo Panaligan Command claiming responsibility over the incident and promising corrective actions and financial assistance to the victims only showed its apparent insensitivity to the plight and safety of the civilians concerned, most of whom came also from the poor sectors.

To facilitate the course of justice and accountability, Akbayan-Negros calls on members of the revolutionary movement to not only mete appropriate disciplinary actions for the erring members of its guerilla forces involved in the ambush but as well to fully observe and strongly enforce their strict adherence to the basic humanitarian tenets so that such incidents may not happen again.

Also in the spirit of dialogue and democratic pluralism, Akbayan-Negros calls on the revolutionary movement to explore other non-violent options and pathways to social change.
