THE City Government of Bacolod honors today, February 14, businessman John Gokongwei Jr., whose contributions have dramatically changed the economic landscape of the city and Negros Occidental.

The City Government headed by Mayor Evelio Leonardia along with Vice-Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson and leaders of the local Filipino-Chinese community will confer on Gokongwei the title of Honorary Mayor of Bacolod City for the Year 2013.

Gokongwie will also be recognized as an Adopted Son of Bacolod City.

The tribute to the businessman is still part of the 8th Bacolaodiat Festival, the celebration institutionalized in the city and spearheaded by the Bacolaodiat Festival Foundation chaired by Dr. Leonito Lopue to welcome the Chinese New Year.

Gokongwei, who ranks with Lucio Tan and Henry Sy among the richest entrepreneurs in the country, established in 1997 the first giant mall in Bacolod City, Robinsons Place Bacolod along Lacson Street in Mandalagan.

Robinsons employed thousands of Bacoleños and Negrenses, brought signature brands and world-class franchises within easy reach of shoppers and mall-goers, and, most importantly, offered local entrepreneurs an accessible and convenient venue conducive for the display and sale of their products.

Gokongwei’s bold investment influenced other big-time investors to put up their own malls in Bacolod, thereby boosting employment opportunities for Negrenses and injecting greater vigor to the province’s economy.

Leonardia said that the Conferment of Honors upon Gokongwei as Honorary Mayor will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Bacolod Government Center while the “Conferment of Honor as Adopted Son” will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the La Proa Ballroom of L' Fisher Hotel.

Gokongwei is the third honoree of the Bacolaodiat, after former Ambassador Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. and Lucio Tan. (CNC)
