Lawmaker brings up Puentevella 'computer scam' anew-A A +A

WITH today’s widespread protest against the controversial “pork” barrel funds scam involving a number of public officials, Bacolod Representative Evelio Leonardia slammed former congressman and now Mayor Monico Puentevella over the alleged misuse of his “pork” barrel.
This was when Puentevella purchased computer sets at P400,000 each, Leonardia, the former mayor of Bacolod, said.
He added that the best insurance against a repeat of the pork barrel funds abuse is to prosecute cases involving it.
On the eve of the Million People March to protest the pork barrel scam, which action is replicated in Negros Occidental and Bacolod City today, Leonardia called for the swift prosecution of cases involving the abuse of pork barrel funds.
Leonardia said Bacolod needs to see a closure on the P39-million computer procurement scandal during Putentevella’s administration.
Now pending with the Office of the Ombudsman in the Visayas, the case is about the alleged overpricing and ghost deliveries of computers using the pork barrel funds of Puentevella. The complaint filed against Puentevella -- using his pork barrel funds in years 2002, 2004 and 2005 -- states he bought computer packages for P400,000 each, when the prevailing prices then ranged only between P29,000 and P66,000 each.
“I respect the people’s will on the pork barrel issue,” Leonardia also said, as he called for continuing vigilance to ensure the abuses of the past are not repeated.
At the very least, Leonardia stressed, we should not forget how the pork barrel funds were abused.
