MassKara Festival 2013 opens-A A +A

THE 20-day celebration of one of the country's highly anticipated fiestas kicked off Tuesday at the Bacolod City public plaza as City Mayor Monico Puentevella declared the 2013 MassKara Festival open.
This year's festivities started with the “Fun MassKa-Run, Walk, Bike, PWD” and were attended by different schools, the Philippine National Police, the Bureau of Fire Protection, Persons with Disabilities (PWD) and employees of the Bacolod Government Center.
Starting points commenced at the Old Bacolod City Airport, Provincial Lagoon and at the Ayala North Point, respectively.
All three routes converged at the City Plaza where a Zumba program greeted them with dynamic Latin beats. Following the physical activity was an inter-faith prayer service led by the representatives of the Roman Catholic, Seventh Day Adventist and Muslim groups.
In his message, Puentevella thanked the participants for joining him in opening the MasssKara Festival and despite the ongoing conflict in Zamboanga and floods in Manila brought by Tropical Storm Quedan, Bacolod is still has a reason to smile.
"We have big reasons to celebrate. Let us enjoy 20 days of merrymaking starting today and be glad for the good weather," Puentevella said.
The city's chief executive also thanked Vice Mayor Greg Gasataya for joining him in the grand opening salvo and likewise acknowledged the presence of city administrator Rolando Villamor who walked from the lagoon to the plaza.
In behalf of the City Council, Vice Mayor Gasataya lauded the efforts of the Kasadya Bacolod Foundation Inc. for a "lively grand opening."
Josefa Puentevella also attended the salvo, as well as Councilor Wilson Gamboa, Jr. and some of the city's executive assistants.
Past and present MassKara Queens were also introduced to the public during the ceremony.
The grand opening of the 2013 MassKara Festival was aired live via “The Morning Show” and was also featured in ABS-CBN's “Umagang Kay Ganda. (PR)
