Leonardia: Puentevella marked them all-A A +A

“ANY project or person associated with him or his administration is marked by the new administration just like the new historical landmark which is a replica of the Bacolod City Government built at the public plaza.”
This was the statement made by Representative Evelio Leonardia (lone district, Bacolod) who told Bombo Radyo he could not believe the historical landmark was covered by a huge tarpaulin.
That structure was conceptualized to commemorate the 75th year of the city, celebrated last June 18.
President Manuel L. Quezon signed a law which authorized the cityhood of Bacolod on June 18, 1938.
That was a singular act that catapulted Bacolod to what it is today which accelerated its progress and development, he said.
Bacolod was among the first cities that changed Bacolod's landscape in terms of history and growth.
To commemorate it, they build this historical marker just like in any other place here and abroad where there were big moments in history that we should be grateful and thankful, thus we make markers and landmarks, the congressman said.
That structure can be used in several ways such as the ground floor is for the souvenir shops for tourists; a provision for a satellite tourism office to entertain and answer queries from tourists and the lobby can be used by artists for their art exhibits.
The second floor can be an ideal place for VIPs and dignitaries during major events or can be used by media to cover major events. That is a strategic view.
Now that it has schedule of activities, if people will start to read it, he or she might be bumped by vehicles because that is a crossroad. Or for motorists who drive, will they read it while driving? That area is not conducive to place materials for reading, Leonardia said.
However, what is sad there is that such project was known to have been built by my administration, so anything that has a smell or trace of Leonardia is changed by the new administration, he said.
The congressman said: “If they don't like Leonardia, they should respect history, the symbolism and message of that structure wherein we honored the cityhood of Bacolod, 75 years ago.
Even the Bacolod Government Center is no longer well lighted at night because “again, that has a mark of Puentevella.”
Even the MassKara festival, when he came back as mayor of Bacolod, it was his campaign promise that when he gets elected as Mayor, he will hold the MassKara festival streetdance back to the public plaza and it happened.
"It was again identified to me that every time there is MassKara, we hold it at the public plaza and again the Puentevella administration tried to hold it at the Paglaum sports complex this year, but it did not push through because Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. did not allow it due to reasons of structural soundness. But there are other reasons that I know of," Leonardia said.
Even the closure of the Lacson Street for Electric MassKara was his personal idea and introduced that in 2007 and people loved and accepted it.
Also the Baywalk, it was closed during his administration, now the new administration will open it. He further said that he was the longest sitting Mayor who chaired Masskara Festival and he understands Masskara Festival.
"We worked hard for it to be known to the world and I remember that the No. 1 critic of MassKara festival before is the incumbent Mayor. But look at MassKara now, many people love it. Now that they are now organizing the MassKara festival, then MassKara festival is now great,” Leonardia said.
