SILAY City Vice Mayor Mark Andrew Golez, president of the Vice Mayor's League of the Philippines (VMLP)-Negros Occidental chapter, said he will bring up the issue of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) taxing of raw sugar in one of their meetings.
Golez said he will study the issue first then bring it up to the board.
The vice mayor and the other newly-elected officials of the VMLP-Negros Occidental and VMLP-Western Visayas were officially inducted to office Friday night by Senator JV Ejercito at the Silay City Civic Center.
Other vice mayors who elected as VMLP-Negros Occidental officials are Niel Lizares (Talisay City) - vice president; Greg Gasataya (Bacolod City) – secretary-general; Chad Feria (La Castellana) – treasurer; Gerry Rojas (Murcia) – public information officer; and Delia Anacan (Kabankalan City) - auditor.
Board Members are Leonardo Quisumbing (San Carlos City), Narwin Javelosa (Sagay City), Rex Depasucat (EB Magalona), Nicholas Yulo (Bago City), Mencil Bascon (Himamaylan City), and Gina Lizares (Sipalay City).
Raymond Gumban of Passi, Iloilo was elected as the new regional chairman.
The VLMP members all over the region have made a consensus to elect him as the new regional chair. Outgoing VMLP regional chairman is Nicholas Yulo of Bago City.
Golez said they will continue the medical and dental missions of the VMLP in the province, and some other activities.
Both Gumban and Golez said the controversial Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) could be retained for so long as it goes to the real projects for their constituents.
Golez said the scholarship programs and medical assistance sourced from PDAF of the congressmen would be affected if it is abolished.
He said PDAF or “pork barrel” is bad if it goes to pockets of some congressmen.
Gumban said that fifth class municipalities need the pork barrel that would go to good and real projects.
He said he will bring up the issue on pork barrel with the regional board of the VMLP, as he knows that each of them have different views on the issue that hounds the country now.
