SENATOR Grace Poe-Llamanzares said he will ask the Senate to conduct an inquiry on the imposition of the 12-percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on raw sugar by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).
Poe-Llamanzares, in an interview with dyRL's Mercado Publiko Program on Monday, said that she only knew of such move by the BIR.
The senator was in Bacolod City Monday as guest speaker of the Conference of the Association of Government Accountants of the Philippines.
"I am saddened by that move of the BIR. The sugar industry is just recuperating from a slant situation. The government should instead support the industry. Basic products should be spared from EVAT especially the petroleum products", Poe-Llamanzares said.
On the higher price of fuels in the province compared to other provinces, Poe-Llamanzares said she personally inquired with Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla about the matter who cited the oil deregulation law as one of the reasons.
"I have learned that an oil price watchdog was already created and we expect them to submit their report. Perhaps we will appeal to the oil companies to be more equitable," Poe said.
