POLITICAL parties, as well as appointed and elected officials, are warned from doing open endorsement of candidates as the campaign period for the October 28barangay elections starts today, October 18.
The campaign period will end on the midnight of October 26.
Jessie Suarez, provincial Commission on Elections (Comelec) supervisor, said that politicians have been aware that the barangay election is a non-political and non-partisan exercise, so they should not intervene.
He said that open endorsement like raising the hands of the candidates by elected official or appointed official is a violation that could bar the winning candidate from assuming office.
Per record of Comelec Provincial Office as of October 16, some 1,477 candidates have filed their Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for Punong Barangay, while 14,081 have filed COCs for Barangay Kagawad all over the province, including Bacolod City.
"We expect 3,000 more candidates to file their COCs", Suarez said as they still sum up the total number of candidates during the last day of filing on Thursday.
The total number of candidates exceeded the record in previous barangay elections.
Suarez also reminded the candidates to properly observe the posting of their election campaign materials. There are 10 common candidates in every barangay and candidates should coordinate with the respective election officers in the respective towns and cities for guidance, he added.
Bearing the names of political parties or group is also prohibited in the campaign materials as campaign should only be done by individual candidates, Suarez further emphasized.
