THE battle for the top position for the Provincial Federation of Liga ng mga Barangay is on between the candidates of the United Negros Alliance (UNA) and Love Negros Party.

The election is set today at 10 a.m. today at the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol in Bacolod City.

UNA and Love Negros Party are the two dominant political coalitions in the province that figured in the May 13 elections.

UNA, headed by Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr., fields Eduardo Javier of Cadiz City for Liga president against Mark Cui of San Carlos City of Love Negros Party led by Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson.

Javier filed his certificate of candidacy Tuesday morning before the Liga office along with other candidates in his line-up, including Anabelle Bermudo of La Carlota City, for vice president; Lourdes Berunio of Manapla, for auditor; and Jose Lopez of Silay City, Roberto Hecita of Sagay City, Noeme Nicor of La Castellana, Oscar Catalino Yulo of Hinigaran, Aurelio Garita II of Pontevedra, Sarry Sorimong of Isabela, Eriberto Baynosa of Toboso and Joselito Gelvosa of Cauayan, for directors.

Cui filed his COC in afternoon with Alexander Palanca of Victorias City, for vice president; Fernando Dolendo of Talisay City, auditor; and Antonio Luis Gonzaga of Murcia, Virgilio Gamao of Escalante City, Benjamin Sian of Himamaylan City, Francisco Jose Bilbao Jr. of Hinobaan, Soledad Leonoras Suatengco of Pulupandan, Ricky Rebatado of Don Salvador Benedicto, Jose Marcelino Garcia of Moises Padilla and Sergio Piansay of Bago City, directors.

Javier said he is already assured of 16 votes, including those of the Liga presidents of San Enrique, Candoni, Binalbagan, E.B. Magalona, and Kabankalan City.

Cui said he also has 16 votes along with those of the Liga presidents of Calatrava, Valladolid, Ilog, Sipalay, and also of Kabankalan City.

He said that Kabankalan City Mayor Isidro Zayco, who is also with Love Negros, has assured him of their Liga president's support in a meeting held by the party at Midas Hotel in Manila. The meeting was arranged by Representative Alfredo Benitez (3rd district), chairman of Love Negros Party Chair.

The meeting held last Thursday was attended by 14 Liga presidents, he said, along with Benitez, Zayco, Lacson and several mayors.

A Sun.Star Bacolod source said that Zayco has committed to Marañon that he will support the UNA candidate after Marañon agreed not to field an opponent against Board Member Raul Rivera in his reelection bid as president of the Philippine Councilors League-Negros Occidental Chapter.

In Bacolod, more barangay captains filed their CoCs for today’s Liga election.

Tanya Familiaran of Barangay 13 filed her CoC for vice president yesterday along with Jeffrey Cuachon, Alexander Diamante, Alfredo Talimodao Jr. and Freddie Vargas of Barangays 36, Taculing, Granada, and 4, respectively.

Those who earlier filed their COCs included Tangub village chief Noli Villarosa, who is running for president. (with reports from CNC)
