BOARD member Salvador Escalante (2nd District, Negros Occidental) said Thursday that the tax withheld by the Capitol on the additional bonus of its employees is correct as confirmed by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

Escalante issued the statement after personnel of the Provincial Accounting Office inquired from the BIR the exact interpretation and computation of the guidelines on taxes levied on the employees' bonuses.

He said they want to address the clamor of the Capitol employees and to clear the issue after he heard varied interpretations of the tax on bonuses by different local government units.

The Capitol employees were given P38,000 each as additional bonus, but withholding taxes as much as half of the bonus were deducted from them depending on their salary grade.

Escalante said that if there was over deduction, the Capitol will refund the employees.

Escalante, who heads the committee on finance, budget and appropriations, also reminded tax payers in Negros Occidental to pay their real property taxes before the year ends.

The Office of the Provincial Treasurer is open on December 28, 30, and 31 to accept payment of taxes and fees, he said.

Escalante added that advance payment for property taxes for calendar year 2014 shall be given 20 percent discount.

Escalante issued the statement after personnel of the Provincial Accounting Office inquired from the BIR the exact interpretation and computation of the guidelines on taxes levied on the employees' bonuses.

Meanwhile, Escalante is now acting as the governor of the province following Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr.’s issuance of Executive Order No. 13-024, series of 2013 appointing him to head the province, while he is on vacation leave from December 26 to 31, for a personal travel to Tokyo, Japan.

Lacson is also on leave from December 21, 2013 to January 4, 2014 for a personal travel to New Zealand.

Escalante was also designated as the presiding officer of the Provincial Board. (TDE)
