Mayor denies link to 5 slay suspects-A A +A

LA CASTELLANA town mayor Alberto Nicor has vehemently denied allegations that he personally knows the five suspects who gunned down policeman Rex de los Reyes last Sunday in Hinigaran town.
Nicor said he is ‘disgusted’ that his family has been dragged into the murder case.
The accusation surfaced after the five suspects were arrested by personnel of Pontevedra Police Station in Barangay Camandag, La Castellana barely an hour after they killed De los Reyes.
Nicor admitted in a television interview that he went to Barangay Camandag when the suspects were intercepted but he denied that he intervened and asked favors for them.
He said that he only told the police not to hurt the suspects to avoid controversy, adding that he would be ashamed to intervene in the case.
The mayor said that his family does not know the suspects, and that they were not companions of his son.
Reports said the five suspects were spotted with Nicor's son during a cock derby in the town a day before Delos Reyes was killed.
Nicor said that the cockfight was open to the public and that the event was his promotion in line with the town fiesta. His sons were there to assist him, he added.
Instead of giving credit to the La Castellana police for the immediate arrest of the suspects, he said, some people have linked his family to the suspects.
Despite the controversy, Nicor said the municipal government will give due recognition to the members of the La Castellana Police Station for a job well done.
Positive in paraffin test
Meanwhile, all five suspects were found positive for firing guns based on the paraffin test, Chief Insp. Lino Dalisay, Hinigaran police chief, said Thursday.
Michael Jancilan, Roger Garilba, Vicente Poleros, Eduardo Montano and Openiano Dolar are now detained at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) jail in Binalbagan town after murder and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition complaints were filed against them before the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.
Montano, Garilba and Poleros were found positive for gun powder nitrates in both of their hands.
The four .45 caliber pistols recovered from the suspects were also found positive of firing while the 9mm pistol believed to be owned by Delos Reyes was found negative of firing, Dalisay further revealed.*
