THE principal of Trinidad Elementary School in Barangay Don Salvador Benedicto, Pontevedra in Negros Occidental province, died after he was shot by a teacher, who also killed himself Monday morning.
Police identified the victim as Jojit Gaudiel, 40, resident of Crossing Tugis, Barangay Miranda; and the suspect as Harold Salas, 37, of Barangay Recreo, both in Pontevedra.
Senior Police Officer 1 (SPO1) Nilo Genosa, case investigator of Pontevedra Police Station, said around 10:20 a.m., Salas pointed a gun at Gaudiel, who was about to leave his office.
The victim tried to run but he fell down and the suspect shot him on the forehead.
The suspect also attempted to shoot his fellow teacher, who tried to help their principal, but his firearm malfunctioned.
Another teacher hugged the suspect to neutralize him. However, Salas went inside a classroom and shot himself on the head.
Genosa said Gaudiel was rushed to Valladolid District Hospital, and was later transferred to the Dr. Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital where he died around 12:30 p.m.
Policemen recovered the two revolvers used by the suspect.
Genosa said they are still conducting further investigation to determine Salas’ motive in killing his superior.
Radio reports said that the night before, the suspect was heavily drunk and was still groggy when he reported to school on Monday.
He reportedly got drunk after he went to the house of his co-teacher, whom he courted, but woman’s parents opposed his intention because he was married.
