Mayor: Let’s make Bacolod top tourist destination-A A +A

BACOLOD City Mayor Monico Puentevella enjoined Bacolodnons to work together to make Bacolod a top tourist destination.
He made the call during the opening of the 9th Bacolaodiat Thursday at the main festival grounds on North Capitol Road.
The Bacolaodiat ushers in the Chinese New Year in the city. January 31 is the celebration of the Lunar New Year.
Puentevella, Vice Mayor Greg Gasataya, festival chairperson Jennifer Gochangco-Ong, and former festival chair Leonito Lopue and other leaders of the Chinese-Filipino community lead the opening rites.
"Bacolaodiat is growing every year. It is a very laudable addition to our tourism events in the city. We cannot only depend only on MassKara festival. We have to produce many tourism events to attract people,” the mayor said.
He also thanked the Filipino-Chinese community in Bacolod for their contribution to the city’s growth.
“Not only for their voluntary support to fire fighting and rescue but also in tourism which is Bacolaodiat festival. I hope that through the years, this will grow further," Puentevella said.
He also mentioned the other major events hosted by Bacolod this week, including the 2013 Batang Pinoy National Finals which gathered 2,500 athletes from all over the country and the 1st Ceres FC 7-A-side Football Festival over the weekend which will be participated by more than 200 football teams and clubs.
"I think we are on the right track. Hopefully Bacolod will become a tourist destination beginning this year," the mayor said.
Other Bacolaodiat events include a lantern parade along Lacson Street at 6 p.m. today. Winners of the lantern dance competition will perform around SM City Bacolod on Sunday at 5 p.m.
Tomorrow, a parade of mascots will be held along Lacson Street at 4:30 p.m. to be followed by GMA Kapuso Night at 5 p.m. at the North Capitol Road and live bands at 10 p.m.
The awarding and closing ceremonies will be held at the North Capitol Road on Saturday, 8:30 p.m., to be followed by a fireworks display at 9 p.m.
