MORE than 600 couples in Negros Occidental are getting married today, Friday, in mass wedding rites organized by their respective local government units (LGUs) as part of the Valentine’s Day tradition.

Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella solemnized the wedding of more than 300 couples at the Bacolod Arts Youth Sports (Bays) Center at 4 p.m. Friday.

In Victorias City, more than 150 couples will wed before Mayor Francis Frederick Palanca, while the same number of couples will tie the knot in front of Hinigaran Mayor Hermilo Aguilar in Hinigaran town.

Both ceremonies were scheduled at 9 a.m. Friday.

The free mass weddings called "I do, I do! Araw ng Pag-Ibig," in Victorias and Hinigaran are sponsored by the local government and the Pag-ibig Bacolod branch.

The couples will be given wedding rings and all their documents from the local civil registrar will also be processed.

The holding of mass weddings is in line with the celebration of the Civil Registration Month with the theme, “Ikaw at Ako Tungo sa Wastong Pagrerehistro.

Puentevella will also celebrate Valentine’s Day at the Bacolod Boys’ Home in Barangay Granada and with the elderly of St. Vincent’s Home for the Aged in Barangay Tangub.

“We want to make them feel that they are loved and special today,” Puentevella said.
