BACOLOD City Police Office (BCPO) director Larry Decena reminded Thursday all station commanders not to allow police investigators to give information on crime incidents to the members of the media.
Mayor Monico Puentevella appointed Senior Superintendent Larry Decena as the new director of the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) effective February 17. Read the story here.
Decena said only the station chiefs or public information officers (PIOs) of police stations are allowed to provide details to news reporters.
He said Philippine National Police Director General Alan Purisima had earlier reminded the PNP personnel that only the designated spokesperson in every local police station can accommodate media queries for consistency.
Decena said he already directed all the case investigators to refrain from giving information to the media and instead allow their respective chiefs of police to issue statements.
He said that station commanders should assign a PIO to address media queries.
“But not all the time the station chiefs can give their job to their PIOs,” Decena said.
Decena said that even inside the police station or in the scene of the crime, the case investigators are not allowed to give details to the media, only the chief of police or spokesperson.
He also discouraged police officers who have little knowledge of the case from giving data to reporters which may lead to contradicting facts.
