THE Bacolod City Public Information Office has advised the public about road closures along Rosario-Araneta Streets and Libertad Street from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. to give way to a National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) directed by the Department of National Defense (DND) through the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD).
Rufino Alcala, head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said Bacolod City has been chosen by the DND as the pilot area for Western Visayas for the 2014 1st Quarter NSED.
The actual preparedness exercise shall be conducted at the Rizal Elementary School around 9 a.m.
"The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center is cognizant of the need to enhance the disaster preparedness of our communities considering that in the recent months, we have seen the calamitous effect of earthquake in various parts of the country especially the Visayas area," Alcala said.
Mayor Monico Puentevella has also rigorously campaigned for disaster-preparedness among the Bacolodnons, and is pushing for enhancement of skills among barangay officials.
Puentevella recently launched a year-round fire safety-prevention and management program dubbed Mamamayan Kontra Kalayo (MKK).
"Being chosen as a pilot area for Western Visayas is a challenge and a gauge for our city in terms of our efficiency in disseminating warning and information to our public and our instantaneous response to disaster occurrences," the mayor said.
Puentevella called for understanding to the temporary road closure today to accommodate the exercise. He also appealed for the cooperation of the people of Bacolod for the activity aimed to intensify the city's disaster responsiveness. (PR)
