THE City Government of Bacolod will soon install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in major city streets and crime-prone areas as part of the Local Anti-Criminality Action Plan approved by the City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) recently.
During the regular meeting of CPOC on March 28, Chief Insp. Noel Polines, operations head of the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO), proposed the installation of CCTV cameras.
“The Council has adopted and approved the Local Anti-Criminality Action Plan that includes the installation of CCTV in major thoroughfares of the city,” Polines said.
The setting up of CCTV cameras is expected to help reduce crimes particularly theft and robbery, mostly the cases on file based on the records of the BCPO.
Polines said Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella assured them that he will look for budget so that the CCTV cameras will be purchased as soon as possible.
The installation of the monitoring equipment is part of the preparations for the 2015 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Conference to be hosted by various cities in the Philippines.
The mayor has asked the assistance of the Bacolod police and the Philippine Army to continually secure the city’s peace and order situation.
“The number one consideration of the Apec Organizing Committee is peace and order. We have to show to them that Bacolod is a safe place and that we have the best police security procedure,” Puentevella said.
Last January, the mayor said the plan is to purchase 10 to 15 units of CCTV cameras.
Among the major streets where CCTV cameras will be installed are Burgos Street, Circumferential Road, Libertad-Araneta Streets, La Salle Avenue, and Araneta Street in front of City Hall.
The mayor also disclosed his plan to purchase 10 additional patrol cars and new traffic lights since most of the city’s traffic lights are no longer functioning especially those in the downtown area.
Puentevella also directed Senior. Supt. Larry Decena, OIC city police director, to deploy uniformed personnel during night time to conduct police visibility patrol and checkpoint operations. (NLG)
