Thieves strike in Bacolod cemetery-A A +A
Wednesday, April 2, 2014
THIEVES didn’t spare the Bacolod Public Cemetery in Burgos Street as they stole steel bars in some tombs and niches and sold these to junk shops.
City General Services Officer Jerome Solinap said he ordered the clearing of trees inside the cemetery compound Tuesday and instructed caretaker Tito Montelibano to close the gate by 5:30 p.m. to prevent other persons from entering the area.
“These are the security measures I implemented here,” he said, adding that he will also assign a security guard at the cemetery.
Solinap said that aside from the five tombs that were destroyed by unidentified persons, there were also niches that were damaged.
Based on the information they have gathered, the persons responsible are scrappers or teenagers who sell scrap irons.
Solinap said that for humanitarian consideration, they gave the two families living inside the cemetery compound a week to vacate the area
