Marañon hopeful for one-island region-A A +A

GOVERNOR Alfredo Marañon Jr. is hopeful that the officials of Negros Occidental and Oriental will get an executive order from President Benigno Aquino III for the creation of the One Negros Region.
Marañon said they will invite officials from both provinces to join him in Malacañang to secure the President’s action.
The governor said that like the creation of other regions, the new region for Negros Island would only need an executive order and would no longer require the holding of a referendum.
Maranon said that the President will have to be convinced that the creation of a one-island region for Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental is beneficial to the people of both provinces.
"We need to convince the President that it is for the good of everybody. We could save a lot if we will have our regional center in Kabankalan City as it would cost us only the land travel. Unlike in our present situation that we would have to stay overnight in Iloilo if we are going to make transactions and attend regional conferences there," the governor said.
Marañon also refuted the claims of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) that lack of funds will hamper the creation of another region for Negros Island. He said the Provincial Government has savings for the purpose.
The governor said that after the resolutions of support from the barangays, cities, and the Municipal Councils will be completed by June, he and other provincial officials will meet President Aquino.
