MAJORITY of the mayors in Negros Occidental, as well as congressional representatives, support the move to create a one region for provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.

E.B. Magalona Mayor David Lacson, president of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines-Negros Occidental Chapter, said he supports the move as this would in essence unite both provinces being located on one island.

Lacson said that while he is yet to meet with the municipal mayors in the province, he personally agrees to have one region for Negros Island.

He suggested though that if the regional offices will be located at the center of both provinces, initially eyed between Kabankalan City of Negros Occidental and Mabinay of Negros Oriental, sub-regional offices should also be put up in Bacolod City.

He said the reason for this is longer travel time for the residents of the northern part of the island.

It would take several hours for localities in the north to motor to the south compared to an hour via fast craft going to Iloilo City.

So far, mayors who have also aired their support included Isidro Zayco of Kabankalan City, Enrique Montilla of Isabela, Manuel Aranda of Binalbagan.

Zayco said the projected location for the regional offices will spur development in the area between his city and that of Mabinay, and the vast Provincial Government property being occupied by the Central Philippine State University can also be utilized.

Fifth District Representative Alejandro Mirasol said that congressmen of the Visayan bloc are very supportive of the move.

He said there is already a resolution for the proposed one-island region for Negros in the House of Representatives.
