NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said on Monday about 268,000 people took part in the 21st Panaad Sa Negros Festival, based on the crowd estimate of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (Noppo).

Senior Superintendent Milko Lirazan, acting Noppo director, whose men along with personnel of other units maintained peace and order during the entire celebration from March 31 to April 6, said the biggest crowds were observed during the last three days.

Aside from the daily activities, Marañon said that food displays lured people to Panaad.

For example, he said, Cebu traders sold about P128,000 worth of chicharon even before the Panaad Festival ended. The durian products of Davao were all sold out.

Booths of the various cities and municipalities earned P5.542 million in product sales during the week-long festival.

This year’s figure is higher by P1.295 million compared to the festival earnings last year of P4.336 million.

The pavilions of the towns and cities earned a total of P3.07 million.

The Organic Agri Fair raked in P649,123.70; Regional Agri Fair, P694,012; and Livestock and Dairy Fair, P1.128 million.

"Despite the huge number of people going to the Panaad Park and Stadium, the festival was very peaceful," the governor said.

This year also marks the first time the regional agri-food fair was participated by other provinces, including Cebu, Davao, Pangasinan, Mindoro, Romblon, Marinduque and Palawan, and even by Ilocos Region.
