A COLLISION between a Nissan Urvan and a public utility jeepney at an intersection of Bacolod-Silay Airport Access Road in Barangay Efigenio Lizares, Talisay City Tuesday morning claimed the life of a passenger and injured 15 others, police said.
The fatality was identified as Dionie Cornelio, 27, of Hacienda Luciana, Barangay San Fernando, Talisay City.
Chief Insp. Joeresty Coronica, Talisay City Police Station chief, said around 6 a.m., jeepney driver Sannie Cornelio, 36, was traveling towards the city proper with his 10 passengers when his vehicle hit the right side of the airport-bound passenger van.
The Nissan Urvan, driven by Cebrelito Fernandez, 53, of Barangay Singcang-Aiport, Bacolod City, was also loaded with 10 passengers.
Initial investigation further showed that the jeepney spinned after hitting the van, which hit a center island. Both vehicles fell on their sides.
Coronica said Dionie, brother of Sannie, who was sitting on the jeepney’s front seat, died on the spot.
Eight jeepney passengers and seven van passengers were injured. They rushed to Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City and at Riverside Medical Center in Bacolod City.
Police investigators believed that one of the drivers ignored the traffic light.
Witnesses told the police the van did not stop at a red light.
Coronica said one of the jeepney passengers, a prosecutor in Bacolod City, sustained a minor injury and is willing to file a case against the erring drivers.
He said the two drivers are in the custody of Talisay police for further investigation.
The investigation will determine who committed lapses for the filing of charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and physical injuries.
